McDonald’s and the new Olympic games

8 07 2008

When it comes to big dollar sponsorships, nobody knows how to do it better than McDonald’s (and Coca-Cola). McD’s has been a sponsor of the Olympics for more than 40 years and this year is sure to be more than a few images of athletes on paper cups. CMO Mary Dillion (in this excellent adage.com report summary) says that McDonald’s will have on-the-ground activation, an online engagement component as well as packaging.

Interesting that one of the athletes who was chosen to be part of the 9 featured on the packaging was/is BMX-er Donny Robinson. While the Olympics add new sports like Mountain Biking, Snowboarding and now BMX – McDonald’s has wisely, perhaps even stealthly – again found its way to the hearts of young-eating Americans. Kudos.
